Ashley Cole is a perfect short-term option for Manchester City 1

Ashley Cole revealed on Twitter this morning that his Chelsea career is over and that he will become a free-agent within the coming weeks.

Sit-up and take notice Manchester City.

Cole may have spent the majority of last season playing second-fiddle to Cesar Azpilicueta, but he is still a very capable full-back and arguably a more secure defensive option than any other left-back in the country.  From Manuel Pellegrini’s perspective, Cole would certainly be an upgrade on Gael Clichy and Aleksandr Kolarov and has at least two more years of top-four football in him.

Additionally, because of the temporary restrictions placed on Manchester City by UEFA, picking the player up as free-agent would add another homegrown player to their Champions League registration list without having to part with any kind of transfer fee.

Liverpool have been mentioned as a suitor for Cole, as have a few other clubs on the continent, but if he wants to continue playing at the top of the English game then City is the only logical choice - he would be a first-team player and have the opportunity to add to his Premier League medal collection before he retires.

And for the club?  He’s still the best English left-back going and a full-back combination of Ashley Cole and Pablo Zabaleta looks fantastic on paper.
