Aston Villa vs Norwich: Analysing Christian Benteke’s first goal 0

Aston Villa were a different side before and after Christian Benteke’s first goal yesterday, and here’s a look at the moment which ultimately changed the game.

The ending to this is obviously spectacular and hugely impressive, but there’s also a lot to admire about the beginning - in particular Benteke’s ability to keep Joseph Yobo pinned in position and away from the ball.

Yobo isn’t a rookie defender, he’s someone who has almost a decade of Premier League experience to his name - so it’s not as if he hasn’t faced this kind of situation before, and nor is the goal a product of his naivety.

Because Ron Vlaar’s long-ball is in the air for so long, Yobo has plenty of opportunity to re-position himself in-front of Benteke and make the clearance, but the Belgian’s strength keeps the Nigerian behind him and away from the ball.

…and then the execution, which is flawless.

As a total package, this goal is enormously impressive, but it’s the individual elements which really make it what it is. Even after Yobo has been held at bay, Benteke still has to chest the ball into the right position to allow him get a shot off - and how difficult was that given the physical pressure he was under?

A fantastic goal, and not dissimilar to the one that Rivaldo scored against Valencia all those years ago.
