Chelsea linked with astronomic triple transfer 11

This is called ‘swinging for the fence’.

The Guardian are convinced that Chelsea will look to conclude three signings before Sunday’s Community Shield: Hulk, Victor Moses, Andre Schurrle, and possibly a fourth in Cesar Azpilicueta.

Don’t fall into the trap of believing that just because this appears in a broadsheet, that it’s any less tenuous than anything cooked-up by the tabloids on a daily basis.

Although the Guardian insist that there will be progress with all three players prior to the fixture with Manchester City, they offer very little reason to believe that. There’s a bit of chatter about Victor Moses’ sell-on fee, some conjecture about how Hulk’s proposed transfer is being held up by the complication of him being part-owned by a third party, and little else. Essentially, this is just an amalgamation of three transfer stories that have been floating around all Summer.

Theoretically, and giving the Guardian the benefit of the doubt over the factual accuracy of their article - what use do Chelsea really have for another three offensive players? If all of these deals went through, it would amount to around £80m being spent on an area of the field in which the club are adequately equipped. One of them? Probably. Two? Possibly. All three? Absolutely no chance.

There’s an added detail about the right-back situation at Stamford Bridge too, with Roberto Di Matteo supposedly being impressed by Sam Hutchinson and Paulo Ferreira in pre-season - with the implication being that he’s loathe to tolerate Marseille’s ball-breaking stance over Azpilicueta. That’s terrifying, because Chelsea need to bring someone in from outside; neither of those two players is capable of performing at a top-4 level.
