Chelsea’s Filipe Luis: Stat comparison with Branislav Ivanovic & Cesar Azpilicueta 0

Chelsea have today confirmed the signing of Filipe Luis from Atletico Madrid, and the left-back has signed a three-year deal with the club.

The expectation is that he will immediately become part of Jose Mourinho’s first-eleven, and will start on the left-hand side with Cesar Azpilicueta reverting to his more natural right-back role.

Here, courtesy of Squawka and their comparison matrix, is a per-90 minute comparison of the two players’ respective league performances in 2013/14.

Filipe Luis’ arrival in London is not particularly good news for Branislav Ivanovic and, despite starting 45 Premier League games last season, the Serbian will presumably become more of a situational player and be used as cover for Azpilicueta and at centre-back.

The usual rules apply with stats: factor in the differences between La Liga and the Premier League and the stylistic variations between the two.  It’s an old cliche, but English football still has more of a reliance on width and wing-play than the Spanish game, so that obviously has an impact on any statistics relating to a full-back’s performance.
