Christian Eriksen’s Tottenham season: Highlights 0

Tottenham Hotspur v West Bromwich Albion - Premier League

That’s what £12m can buy?  Really, and Liverpool are ready to pay up to £30m for Adam Lallana?

Sure, Christian Eriksen’s cut-price move to Tottenham was aided by his rapidly expiring Ajax contract, but credit where it’s due - Andre Villas-Boas and Franco Baldini got an absolute steal.

The Dane didn’t take to life at White Hart Lane immediately, but after his return from an injury sustained on international duty he really began to show exactly why he’s been such a hyped talent all these years.  There’s an old fashioned quality to Eriksen, and it’s a pleasure to watch a footballer who is so effortlessly comfortable with the ball at his feet.  He produces key assists and scores eye-catching goals, but it’s the little touches around the pitch which make him special: the nudges around a corner, the occasional cushioned-volley which finds a teammate in-stride, the near-perfect first-touch.  He’s got an awful lot of ability, and it will be fascinating to see how his career develops after a full pre-season in England.

And, corny though it is to say it, he seems to enjoy the game - watch him celebrate and look how much enjoyment he seems to derive from playing.  It’s quite rare now.

He was voted Player of the Year by all sorts of Tottenham supporters’ groups, and it would be easy to asterisk that by saying that he really didn’t face much competition - true, but don’t overlook just how impressive he frequently was in 2014.  In his last 12 appearances he returned seven goals and six assists, and those statistics don’t even do justice to how influential he frequently was through March and April.

The biggest challenge for the incoming manager at Spurs?  Beyond sorting the defence, the attitudes, the full-back depth issue and getting the best out of Erik Lamela?  Finding a way to incubate Eriksen’s ability and maximise his value - find a midfield combination which allows him to become freer and enables him to influence games from a solid, secure platform.

Here are some video highlights from his debut campaign:
