Classic goals: West Ham’s Paolo Di Canio (vs Chelsea)

The Premier League Owl

The seminal Paolo Di Canio goal was probably his ridiculous scissor-kick at Upton Park against Wimbledon, but from a personal standpoint this has always been my favourite from his collection.

Di Canio, both on and off the pitch, dictated his own terms, and this goal is perhaps a manifestation of that personality - there are few players who could execute this, and almost none who would attempt it.

This is the kind of thing that you try during a kick-about with your friends, and not in the middle of a Premier League game at Stamford Bridge.

Forget the little bit of a luck the Italian gets after his first-touch, because everything else is quite brilliant: the little flick up, the volley on the full, and a completely helpless goalkeeper.

…and he strikes it with his wrong foot.

Di Canio was just extremely gifted, there’s no other description for him. An outrageous goal from one of the most watchable players to ever grace English football.
