Discussing the prospect of John Terry leaving Chelsea 0

There’s a story in The Mail this morning about new Galatasary manager Roberto Mancini potentially attempting to bring John Terry to Turkey during the January transfer window.

Whether that’s true or not I don’t know, but it’s a very unrealistic objective.

Terry is out-of-contract in the Summer, but don’t expect that to remain the case for much longer; Chelsea will likely extend his deal for another year, because he’s performing at a high enough level to warrant it. Yes, the club have guidelines about contractual offers to players over a certain age, but as we saw last Summer they’re willing to bend around certain members of the squad.

Terry is more than just a player at Stamford Bridge, and more than just the club captain, he’s an integral part of Jose Mourinho’s power structure - he’s completely loyal to the Portuguese and he holds an enormous amount of influence in the dressing-room.

There will be a time when Chelsea have to say goodbye to Terry, Frank Lampard, and Ashley Cole, but as and when they do they’ll be losing some real character and backbone, and just be left with highly-paid players with little or no natural loyalty to the club. That’s not something they’ll be in a hurry to do.

Terry’s not going anywhere in January.
