Falling for Tottenham’s Lewis Holtby 2

Lewis Holtby is a special kind of player.

Not talent-wise, because although he’s a very gifted footballer, that’s not what I mean - instead, he’s an example of one of those characters who it’s very easy for supporters to embrace.

From his frequent appearances on Tottenham’s social media channels, it’s clear that the German is a vibrant and confident personality, but more than that, he plays the game with a tangible desire and enthusiasm which is very infectious.

Whilst they aren’t really comparable as player, there are definitely shades of Rafael van der Vaart in Holtby, and there are certainly similarities with regards the relationship that the Dutchman managed to build with the White Hart Lane crowd. Because of his sporadic first-team minutes, Holtby isn’t quite at Van der Vaart’s level of popularity yet, but there are still clear parallels.

Footballers like that are a bit more three-dimensional, and a fan will always have a certain affinity towards them because they’re easier to grasp - they’re more real and more human. When Lewis Holtby plays, he does so with an almost childish enthusiasm, and that’s very endearing - and it’s a refreshing departure from the generic, ‘taking himself much too seriously’ countenance of the average modern player.
