Fulham’s Brede Hangeland: Season statistics 1

Fulham fans can breathe easier, because Brede Hangeland has finally signed a new contract which will keep him at the club until 2015. Given that the Norwegian would have been a free-agent in the Summer, and that at 31 Hangeland only has a few more years left at the top of the game, there were reasonably fears that he could have used the expiration of his deal as a way to leverage a move elsewhere.

Not so, he’s staying at Craven Cottage - and that’s hugely encouraging for Martin Jol and everyone at the club.

Just to emphasise how important Hangeland is to Fulham, here are a couple of statistics from his season so far:

- He wins 3.9 aerial duels per game, 0.9 more than any other Fulham player. As a comparison, Aaron Hughes averages 3 per game, and Philippe Senderos manages just 1.2.

- He makes 9.1 defensive clearances per game, 0.9 more than any other Fulham player.

- Hangeland blocks 0.8 shots per game, the joint-most amongst his teammates (Steven Sidwell).

Those are just his most obvious attributes, and they don’t document the intangible benefits he brings to this team - this is great news for Fulham.
