Gareth Bale taking some heat at Real Madrid 0

It’s been a while since Gareth Bale was mentioned in these pages, and he’s been the subject of quite a bitchy attack from former Real Madrid Director General Jorge Valdano:

“Bale has a rare anxiety because he doesn’t seem to be with the pace of the game.

When you’re anxious, you play at a speed above what suits you, but he is absent. The team saves him. There are many points of attention, including Jese, who is going unnoticed in Bale’s bad moments.”

(Goal.com)

The criticism isn’t unwarranted, because Bale has at times looked a little lost in Real’s line-up, but equally it’s still a little harsh - he’s adjusting to a new role, within a new shape, and with the weight of a world-record price-tag on his shoulders.

It’s worth remembering that Real Madrid actually sacked Valdano back in 2011, and this might be a thinly-disguised pot-shot at the club’s owners and their record-signing. Bale may not quite be at his 2012/13 level at the moment, but still scored nine goals, provided nine assists, and be one of Real’s better players in a season in which they’re currently joint-top of La Liga.

It’s certainly not accurate to say that ‘the team saves him’, nor is it really true that Jese’s form has been ignored or lost in the shadow of Bale’s profile.
