Manchester United and Miralem Pjanic: A natural and logical fit 0

Like everybody else, I’ve read the reports of who Manchester United are supposedly going to pursue in January: Diego Costa, Koke, Ander Herrera, Leighton Baines etc.

I’m surprised that, even on a speculative basis, Miralem Pjanic isn’t on that list.

There are a couple of areas which David Moyes clearly needs to strengthen in the near future, and one of those is the central midfield position, and the role in the team which exists between Michael Carrick and whoever is used in the second-forward slot.

Pjanic is having a good season for Roma, but that isn’t just because the team as a whole has been performing well, he’s an elite player in the making. Whilst he doesn’t really have an English comparable, in a United context he’s essentially a much more three-dimensional and dynamic version of Tom Cleverley: he uses the ball very well in a high-percentage sense, his creative passing is excellent, he’s a long-range goal-threat, and is technically very accomplished on the ball.

It’s always hypothetical to say this about players from other leagues without Premier League experience, but Pjanic would theoretically be the perfect addition both in terms of the attributes he could bring to Old Trafford and the way in which he could be dropped into the current formation.

I prefer him to someone like Herrera, because he’s a more impactful player and someone whose offensive ambition is probably better suited to English football - and, he’s a far more realistic target in January than Atletico Madrid’s Koke.
