Mousa Dembele to stay at Fulham 0

The Premier League Owl

Well done, good decision.

With Clint Dempsey almost certain to leave Craven Cottage, there were fears - mostly press fueled admittedly - that that would be the catalyst for Mousa Dembele to seek pastures new.

Not so - Dembele has reaffirmed his commitment to the club and to Martin Jol:

“I’m very happy to stay at Fulham, especially because of the boss. I think it’s very important to have the backing of the manager and he’s a coach who gives me a lot of confidence - that’s why I feel I owe it to the gaffer as well.

I think every player needs that and I’m no different. I go to training every day and work with joy. It’s a fantastic club and I’m not in a hurry to move anywhere.”

Lots of tabloid rags are trying to take credit for those quotes, but they’re actually from the Fulham Chronicle.

Dembele - if he remains true to his word - has been wise here. There are lots of players in the Premier League who, as soon as they sense interest from a bigger club, would start pressing for a move. In this instance, the player recognises that he’s playing at the right level for his stage of development and, more importantly, is under the direction of the right manager.

How many times have we seen players through away a couple of years of their career to go and sit on the bench of a ‘big’ club - despite it being obvious that they were never in any danger of getting regular first team football.

Mousa Dembele is a good player, and an improving one - it’s heartening to see him sidestep that particular landmine.

How refreshing not to be writing another article about short-termism and greed.
