Beyond conceding two very cheap goals, Chelsea were also very ponderous in Paris last week and after Eden Hazard had equalised from the penalty-spot they didn’t take advantage of the swing in the game’s momentum.
Tonight will be easier, though, because tonight the objective is very obvious: a two-nil win sees them through.
Here’s a suggested line-up:
- Ramires is suspended, John Obi Mikel is injured, and both Nemanja Matic and Mohamed Salah are cup-tied in Europe.
- Samuel Eto’o is doubtful, but if there is any chance of him playing then he will surely start at the top of the formation. Jose Mourinho has shown time and again this season that, during the big games, he trusts Eto’o more than his other forwards and has more faith in his ability to bring knit the attacking phases together - that’s crucial, because obviously the strength in this Chelsea side is in advanced-midfield.
- David Luiz and Frank Lampard are really the only plausible combination in the middle of the pitch, and so expect to see Lampard play quite a static, distributing role with Luiz given a slightly longer leash.
- Eden Hazard and Oscar were both left-out against Stoke at the weekend, and that’s as clear a sign as any that both will start this evening - and that would be the consensus option anyway. PSG showed last week that they can struggle with roving playmakers and both of those Chelsea players caused issues in the Parc des Princes.
