Picking an England team for this evening 1

England face Peru at Wembley tonight for the first of three World Cup warm-up matches (Ecuador and Honduras on 4th/7th June in Miami).

The time to experiment is over, really, and Roy Hodgson needs to start building some chemistry within his first-choice side.  So, using that mentality, here’s an England team for this evening:

- Luke Shaw is unwell and so isn’t considered.

- There seems little value in giving game-time to any of the players who are on the reserve-list.

- Jack Wilshere has an obvious need for match-fitness, but the greater good outweighs that and Jordan Henderson has earned his starting spot for the World Cup.  Hodgson will almost certainly already know his starting eleven for Italy, and you would expect this line-up to be an indication of what that will be.

- Daniel Sturridge needs to play centrally in Brazil.  There’s no discussion about that; England have made this mistake so many times and surely this is the moment to recognise the value of starting players in familiar positions and in roles in which they’ve spent the previous season thriving.  As a national team, we don’t have that many qualities that will scare opponents, but Sturridge’s pace is one of them - put him through the middle, get him on the back shoulder of defenders, and encourage him into the kind of positions that we saw him in for Liverpool.
