Player to watch this weekend: Andros Townsend (Tottenham) 2

Andros Townsend

Andros Townsend

Tottenham travel to Villa on Sunday for the 4pm televised game, and Andros Townsend will presumably keep his place in the side ahead of the newly-healthy Aaron Lennon.

Townsend is an unknown quantity for Spurs at the moment, and seems to oscillate violently between playing ludicrously low-percentage football and, very occasionally, sharing the ball with his teammates. Clearly, he is a ‘project’ for Andre Villas-Boas and the Spurs coaching staff.

This is someone to watch this weekend because it’s always interesting to note how a young player reacts to his first international success. Townsend made a very positive contribution in both recent England games, and - naturally - the press haven’t wasted any time in artificially elevating him well beyond his actual level.

Who didn’t see that coming?

Townsend is supposedly a very grounded individual, but that will have been tested by the events of the past ten days; media love can do funny things to young players, and Tottenham fans will hope that their young winger can see beyond the short-termism and fickle praise, and not lose sight of the need to refine the balance in his game.

That’s the big fear: that Townsend suddenly believes that he’s the finished article because of his new international recognition, and that the ‘cut inside and shoot’ part of his personality becomes even more exaggerated.
