The best approach for England with the new Southampton duo 0

Jay Rodriguez and Adam Lallana are involved with England for the first time this week, and let’s hope that they actually get the opportunity to play some minutes in the upcoming games.

Whether it be this week or next, they have to be allowed to actually experience international football and not just make-up the numbers in training - otherwise, calling them up will have been a waste of time.

We’ve seen this before across a variety of England set-ups - fringe or unfashionable players get brought in to train, but get over-looked for the matches at the expense of players who are already known quantities at that level.

Seeing how a new player performs in England training is obviously important, but just like at club level there are those who do and do not thrive in artificial conditions - hence the only true measure of international readiness is performance in the games themselves.

Lallana and Rodriguez have to both play from the start in one of these games, they can’t just be given a token twenty minutes here or there. Nobody learns anything from brief substitute appearances, so here’s hoping that Roy Hodgson is genuinely interested in giving these two a chance.
