Weekend performance: Robin van Persie (Manchester United)

Manchester United

On Friday, before the season started, I posed the question as to whether Robin van Persie could managed a third-straight season without disruption by injury - if the form he showed yesterday is anything to go by, Manchester United fans will dearly hope so.

I’ve discussed his second goal in more depth here, but his first is just as worthy of description - talk about ‘concentration in spite of defensive pressure’, what a fabulous way to put himself on the board in 2013/14.

Here are his individual statistics from yesterday:

- Played all 86 minutes before being substituted for Anderson.

- Had 7 shots on goal, 3 of which tested Michel Vorm.

- Scored twice.

- Completed 88% of his passes.

- Had 40 touches of the ball, the least of any starting player who appeared for more than 70 minutes.

- Won 3 aerial duels.

- Created 1 scoring opportunity.

- Wasn’t dispossessed at any point during the game.

- Was caught-offside once.

- Completed 1 successful dribble.

- Completed 50% of the 4 long-balls he attempted.

- Completed 2 of the 3 crosses he attempted.
