Why Tottenham shouldn’t count on Willian signing 2

The Premier League Owl

Shakhtar Donetsk’s Brazilian playmaker Willian has obviously been making some noises about Spurs and Andre Villas-Boas over the last couple of days, and has spoken about his relationship with the Tottenham manager.

But don’t assume that he’ll be necessarily signing for the club in the January window.

This is like the Eden Hazard scenario last season: the Belgian made lots of comments about how he liked the look of the young team that was developing at White Hart Lane, but when it came down to it, what interested him most was visibility and cash - maybe that’s harsh on him, because it doesn’t look like a bad decision, but you take the point.

Never trust a footballer, and never put any stock in anything they say in the press.

“Tottenham is a big club and it has a good person in charge. Andre Villas-Boas wanted to bring me to Chelsea and also tried at Tottenham.

He always sends me messages. We are always in touch, and he has become a friend, for sure.

Choosing between the two clubs would be difficult. I don’t know.

Chelsea is Chelsea. They are a great team, with amazing players and are the champions of Europe.”

There are a dozen different different things which can change between now and January, so this is all best ignored until then. Willian would be a great addition to Villas-Boas’ squad, but as and when he does leave the Ukraine, don’t expect it to be an emotional decision which determines where he ends up.
